About This Course

Kickstart your game design career by building your own prototype in Unreal Engine 5. Learn the full development cycle of production as you transform your ideas into a fully playable 3D game. Then, step over to the emerging industry of virtual reality with the Meta Quest 2. You’ll dive deeper with Adobe Medium — an innovative VR sculpting software — and take your place at the helm of creativity for your game’s final vision.

In week one, build your prototype using the fundamentals of game design in UE5. Implement Blueprint Visual Scripting to develop essential mechanics and build the framework of your prototype. Define the scope of your project and transform your story and ideas into an immersive experience with compelling gameplay.

In week two, don the Meta Quest 2 and step into an immersive virtual studio where you’ll sketch, build, and sculpt dynamic 3D assets to customize your game. Experience the workflow of professional 3D game artists first-hand, using Adobe Medium to craft your design in vivid virtual reality and taking your ideas from concept to final 3D model. Finally, you’ll import your creations into UE5 and launch your finished prototype!

With an essential game design and 3D sculpting skill set, you’ll have all the tools you need to polish your portfolio and prep your work for college admissions and career applications.

Sample Schedule

In this course, students will explore game design and 3D sculpting to build a game prototype in Unreal Engine 5. Using the Meta Quest 2 with Adobe Medium, students will sculpt their designs in virtual reality and import them into their Unreal project.

Here’s a sample of what each week in the course could look like! Please keep in mind that students will progress at varying paces; this is a general outline of the key material and overall student experience.

Begin with an in-depth look into Blueprints Visual Scripting with Unreal Engine 5. Students will design level prototypes and environments for their game. Then, they’ll implement game mechanic systems, including player movement and collectible items. To wrap up the first week, students will finalize the basic prototype of their game and add more advanced elements such as health and damage systems.

In the second week, students will shift to customizing their project with assets made from scratch. They’ll start by concepting ideas for their game assets and then sculpt in VR using their Meta Quest 2 with Adobe Medium. Once they’ve crafted their designs, students will import all of their assets into their UE5 project. At the end of the week, students will add finishing touches to their prototype and playtest their game with their peers.
